Chicago Med is NBC’s medical drama that follows the personal and professional lives of doctors and nurses in the emergency department of the fictional Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. Created by Dick Wolf, the series is the third spin-off in the One Chicago franchise, which also includes Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D. and the now-canceled Chicago Justice. It first premiered in 2015 and is currently on its 9th season.
S. Epatha Merkerson has starred as Dr. Sharon Goodwin, the director of patient and medical services at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, since Season 1. Dr. Goodwin is one of the only original characters left on the show, along with charge nurse Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) and Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt). Season 9 has been a particularly challenging season for Dr. Goodwin, as she became the the main caregiver of her ex-husband Bert (Gregory Alan Williams), who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. With the majority of her focus being on Bert’s condition, Dr. Goodwin may have neglected her own health. Read on to learn if Dr. Sharon Goodwin is also sick on Chicago Med.
What happened to Dr. Sharon Goodwin on Chicago Med?
What happened to Sharon Goodwin on Chicago Med? Although we don’t know for sure, the promo for the upcoming episode “Get By With A Little Help From My Friends,” which airs on May 15, suggests that Goodwin may be facing some health challenges of her own.
After teasing some conflict for Dr. Charles and Dr. Marcel Crockett (Dominic Rains), the clip ends with Dr. Goodwin nearly collapsing. Although she doesn’t completely faint, Dr. Charles looks incredibly concerned as he steadies hers and asks: “What happened?!” The words “everyone,” and “pushed to the edge,” then flash across the screen.
The episode’s official synopsis suggests that it will be another stressful episode of Dr. Goodwin, as she “is forced to make a tough decision about Bert’s future.” Throughout the season, Dr. Goodwin has been struggling to balance her ex-husband’s care with the demands of her job. She’s been leaning on Dr. Charles for support, who has been advising her on how to get Bert the treatment he needs. Though the pair are split up and Dr. Goodwin has moved on with Dr. Dennis Washington (John Earl Jelks), she clearly still cares about her ex. The former couple share three children together and multiple grandchildren, so Bert’s declining health has been a huge strain on the whole family.
Since she’s the doctor in the family, though, Bert’s care has fallen on Dr. Goodwin’s shoulders and she is tasked with making the hard decisions that he can longer make himself. We suspect the big decision she will have to make in the upcoming episode will have to do with Bert’s living situation, and deciding whether or not she wants to place him a professional care facility. The weight of this decision, coupled with the stress of her job, has likely affected Dr. Goodwin’s own health. As we learned early on in the show, Dr. Goodwin has Type 2 diabetes, so she most likely needs to slow down or take a well-deserved break.
Elsewhere in the episode, an infection threatens Crockett’s risky liver transplant and Maggie and Charles help a struggling burn unit nurse. “Get By With A Little Help From My Friends” is the penultimate episode of Season 9, which will conclude on May 22.
