Northwestern University grapples with funding scrutiny in congressional hearing
WASHINGTON (TND) — Northwestern University was in the hot seat this week as President Michael Schill came before the U.S. House Committee on Education. These universities are not only heavily subsidized by taxpayers but also by foreign entities and governments.
Open the Books CEO Adam Andrzejewski joined The National Desk’s Angela Brown to break it down.
“They're heavily funded by taxpayers so we broke the story this week. Our auditors at Open the Books found $4 billion of taxpayer funds, federal government contracts and grants flowed to Northwestern since 2018,” he said. “This is a tremendous amount of money. This is during a period when their endowments soared to over $15 billion.”
Open the Books discovered Qatar donated $700 million to Northwestern University.
The institution established a campus in Qatar that specializes in journalism and is heavily funded by Al Jazeera, hence, giving the journalist influence at Northwestern University.
“They don't need taxpayer help. They need to lighten the load on the American taxpayer,” Andrzejewski said. “Maybe Congress, instead of subsidizing them, should consider taxing them.”
