Man Admits Causing Horrific Brentwood Crash That Severed Woman's Legs, Injured 2 Others
Kevin Rosas-Daqui, age 25, of Brooklyn, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular assault and other charges in Suffolk County Court on Monday, July 10.
The crash happened at around 12:40 a.m. on Nov. 5, 2022, on the Sagtikos Parkway in Brentwood.
According to the Suffolk County DA’s office, Rosas-Daqui had just left the Marine Corps Ball in Westbury and was intoxicated and speeding when he slammed into a disabled vehicle near Crooked Hill Road.
He also struck a woman who had been standing behind the car and was trying to remove a spare tire from her trunk. The impact severed both of her legs instantly.
An off-duty Suffolk County Police officer and his wife arrived moments later and used their belts to make tourniquets to control the woman’s bleeding. She was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery.
Two passengers in Rosas-Daqui’s car were also injured, including a member of the US Marine Corps who was hospitalized for 18 days after suffering skull and facial fractures. Another passenger was diagnosed with a lower spine fracture.
Testing an hour after the crash showed that Rosas-Daqui had a blood alcohol content of .22 percent, almost triple the legal limit, according to prosecutors.
“This defendant’s selfish and reckless decision to drink and then drive caused catastrophic injuries to multiple innocent people, one of whom will suffer for the rest of her life,” Suffolk County DA Raymond Tierney said.
In court Monday, Rosas-Daqui pleaded guilty to the following charges:
- Aggravated vehicular assault (felony)
- Aggravated driving while intoxicated (misdemeanor)
- Reckless driving (misdemeanor)
He is scheduled to be sentenced on Thursday, Sept. 14.
