Democrats increasingly worried about economy despite Biden's assurances, Pew survey finds

The number of Democrats with a positive view of the American economy is slipping despite the White House's messaging about promising trends in wages and prices, a new Pew Research survey found.

The survey, which was conducted between May 13 and 19, found just 37% of Democrats think the economy is in good or excellent shape. That number is down from 44% in January.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre reminded reporters of "macroeconomic progress," including wage and price improvement, during a May 15 press conference, but conceded there are still many American families that are "struggling."

We’re going to continue to fight inflation. We’re going to continue to be really focused on that. And that’s what you’re going to see from this administration," Jean-Pierre said.

President Biden often takes aim at former President Trump for the unemployment spike during his presidency, but Trump defenders have pointed out that job loss was fueled by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The previous administration lost more jobs on its watch than any administration since Herbert Hoover. That's a fact,” President Biden said during a 2022 appearance in Cleveland.

The White House and Biden campaign social media accounts have followed a similar path, repeatedly posting about job gains since Biden took office. The posts are frequently fact-checked by X's Community Notes system.
